Rainbow Scrap Challenge for January

I decided to make blocks from the Faux Log Cabin pattern for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge for 2020 (see this post).

All was going well with my greens until I spotted myself starting to put together this block (the one at the top is correct - the two strips at the bottom left are goofy):

No, you can’t make some right-handed blocks and some left-handed blocks and expect them to fit into these design choices – lol !!

So a little rip-rip-rippit occurred, but eventually I finished this lovely batch for the Challenge:

Now waiting for February’s oranges to be selected from my scrap bins...

ONE MONTHLY GOAL

I am pleased that I have completed my January goal for the Challenge hosted by Elm Street Quilts!  If it hadn’t been for this incentive, I don’t think this quilt would have been finished and off to comfort a child in need.  I mailed a box out today to Quilts BeyondBorders with this quilt and two others in it.  Feels good!

The backing is actually a lovely butter-yellow with polka dots that are similar to those in the mushrooms on the front of the quilt.  Serendipity to find this backing!

The last one was one I purchased from a store that was selling store samples at a deep discount.  Score!

These might be going to teenagers so they are slightly larger than my usual size.  Hope they like them!

 

Sidetracked

I didn’t mean to start up posting to my blog again and then leave it sitting idle but I got waylaid by a good friend. 


I used to make baby quilts for all of my coworkers for quite a long time.  And, of course, I made baby quilts for members of my own family and a few close friends for their children or grandchildren.  I don’t make quilts for customers and now I don’t make quilts on request.  I much prefer to make charity quilts for children in need.


I was in a brain fog over the holidays and instead of saying no when asked to make a baby quilt, I found myself saying “primary colors or pastels”?  Big mistake.  At least I got to choose the fabric I wanted to work with.    So, this is what I rushed to get done so I could go back to what I had planned on doing this month:

Dr Seuss fabrics are always fun for babies and toddlers.  As is often the case with panels, the fabric tends to be askew and I had to finagle the block size to accommodate and correct the unevenness.  But, all-in-all, I think it turned out to be cute.


Then I got back on my schedule and will probably be able to finish my project for One Monthly Goal.  Will try to post tomorrow!!

Welcome Back to Day Two of 2020

Today is the day that I reveal my two New Year's Resolutions and the two groups I will link up to in order to, hopefully, maintain my good intentions!


2020 RESOLUTION ONE:


I have added the button on the right side of this blog for the Rainbow Scrappy Challenge for 2020.  I intend to pick a block pattern and make several blocks a month to have one or two quilts completed this year. 


I always cut my bindings 2.5 inches wide because that size is useful for a lot of patterns.  This is the bin where I toss my extra cutoff bindings:

The January colors for the Challenge are greens – especially bright and cheerful greens.  And these are the greens that I pulled out of my bin this morning:

Haven’t selected which bright ones will go into this month’s blocks yet.  Patience, Grasshoppers!

I am torn between two choices of block patterns for this Challenge.

This first one is called Icy Roads, a block I originally got from Santiam Scrappers BOM for January 2004.  A pattern with the same name is now available on Etsy from Carter Creek Quilts, seller: Cynthia aka Sam.  Don’t know if it is the same person as gave out the BOM but the block sure looks the same.  I have had it on hand to make for a very long time (yep, since 2004).

This one was a free block from Billie Lauder, with graphics & written directions by Mary Ann Beattie, called Faux Log Cabin.  I’ve held on to this pattern for a long time also.  This link will take you to the archived pattern:

2020 RESOLUTION TWO:


My second resolution is to participate in One Monthly Goal for 2020 sponsored by Elm Street Quilts.  


The button to link is on the right side of this blog also.  Since I have a lot of partially completed projects (oh, you do, too?!), I’m looking for the motivation this offers to get some projects completed.  PS  There are P.R.I.Z.E.S.  Just sayin’!

My project for their January link-up is a partially completed kid’s quilt (I think it was made of Disappearing 9-patch blocks, but it’s been awhile since I made it).  It is currently 42 inches square, but I would prefer a larger size and for it to be a rectangle, so it needs top and bottom borders.  Then on to quilting and binding.  Definitely a go for January!

After a lengthy hiatus from this blog, I am back and trying to make up for lost time.  I am quite sure that I will have to retrain myself on how to use Blogger so forgive me if my posts look funny for a short while.

Before the end of 2019, I was able to finish up a few quilts of my own and quilt a few tops for my favorite groups.

These are the quilts that I quilted for Sunshine On-line Quilt Guild:

And these are my own that I was able to finish up and get into the mail.  Some were made using donated blocks:

And this one was purchased at a quilt show.  The print was too darling to pass up!

The above went to a group called Wrap-a-Smile that will send them along with medical personnel going to perform cleft lip/palate surgeries on children in need around the world.
Another box went off to a group called Quilts Beyond Borders - they will distribute them to children in orphanages or in some other need here in the US or around the world.  That box included:
